UBB Miners Memorial

A special ceremony to commemorate the events that took place at the Upper Big Branch Coal Mine on April 5, 2010 will took place on year later at the Whitesville Elementary School Gymnasium, only a couple of miles from the entrance to the mine. The ceremony recognized the 29 miners that died on that day, the first responders and mine rescue teams that took part in the search and recovery efforts.

The event, which was closed to the public, was be attended by family members of the lost miners, and government officials. Speakers included:

• Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito
• US Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis
